As was his usual practice, in releasing the 1983 iconic Pas de Deux Suite, Alex Katz refrained from including narrative on his subjects, leaving everything to the imagination or knowledge of the viewer. Katz focused his concerns on the style of his subjects, and the stylistic clothing that each wore. In each of these multi-panel paintings, all of the women are featured wearing Norma Kamali designer coats. The men are displayed in their exquisitely-cut suits, each characterized by a different level of comfort.
Katz, who commonly uses fellow artists, poets, critics and dancers in his paintings, portrays a certain camaraderie within each of these portraits. Each, with its snapshot-like quality, features at least one celebrity of the arts industry. At the time. Katz painted this suite, each of these couples either was dating or married.
Katz has been exhibiting his work for nearly fifty years and still resides and works in his hometown of Brooklyn, New York.
