Greenwich, CT Martin Lawrence Galleries, America’s premier gallery of fine art, has recently signed an exclusive agreement with French artist Philippe Bertho, and announces his American debut in two personal appearances at Martin Lawrence Galleries in Newport Beach on November 12th and at Martin Lawrence Galleries in San Francisco on November 13th.
William Zimmer, an art critic for the New York Times, has the following to say in his introduction to the new Bertho catalogue: “The grounds or fields of Bertho’s paintings are radically different
stuff from his figures and he renews the standard opposition of figure and ground in a dynamic way. If the figures have their origin in a beloved American realist style, the fields of confounded space that they play on are reinvigorated surrealism. Bertho’s method is easy, he employs shadows to produce the third dimension but the implications are literally boggling. Modern science alerts us to a universe full of black holes. By decorating those holes Bertho achieves a universe that is even more paradoxical.”
Says David Rogath, owner of Martin Lawrence Galleries, “Bertho’s work defies any prior categorization by art historians. In fact, he is breaking new ground. Bertho can be described as a ‘Pop Illusionist’. He creates what can be viewed as 21st century contemporary trompe l’oeil. The art, like the artist, is a breath of fresh air for the art scene. Nobody else is doing imagery like this, anywhere.”
The artist will attend the opening receptions for these two exhibitions. In Newport, the cocktail reception, which is open to the public, takes place on Friday, November 12th from 6:30-9 PM. Newport Beach Mayor Tod Ridgeway will be on hand to present Bertho with a Proclamation, declaring November 12th as “Philippe Bertho Day.” In San Francisco, the event (also open to the public) will take place on Saturday, November 13th from 6:30-9 PM. Deputy Consul of France, Mrs. Olivier Arribe, will be on hand to present Bertho with the prestigious “Certificate of Honour.”
Original paintings by Philippe Bertho are for sale, as well as a debut collection of his first limited edition serigraph prints. A catalogue of his work is also available.
Martin Lawrence Galleries, one of America’s foremost publishers of contemporary fine art prints and sculpture, represents a number of today’s most popular artists from around the world, such as Fanny Brennan, Erté, Kerry Hallam, Liudmila Kondakova, Thomas McKnight, and Bruce Ricker.
