Greenwich, CT David and Leslee Rogath,
owners of Martin Lawrence Galleries, have lent four important works by Belgian surrealist artist Rene Magritte to the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris for a major Magritte retrospective which will run from February 11 to June 9, 2003. The four paintings, La Valse Hésitation, La Legende Dorée, La Réconnaissance Infinie, and La Découverte de Feu, are part of the personal art collection of Mr. and Mrs. Rogath. These paintings were previously lent by the Rogaths to the Museo del Risorgimento in Rome in 2001, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2000, and the Musée des Beaux Arts in Belgium.
Of his work, Magritte is quoted as saying, "My painting is visible images which conceal nothing; they evoke mystery and,
indeed, when one sees one of my pictures, one asks oneself this simple question 'What does that mean'? It does not mean
anything, because mystery means nothing either, it is unknowable." A meticulous and skillful technician, Magritte is one
of the most enigmatic artists of the 20th century and an important figure in the surrealistic movement. He is noted for
works that contain an extraordinary juxtaposition of ordinary objects or an unusual context that gives new meaning to
familiar things. The works exhibited at the Jeu de Paume represent his first Surrealist period of the mid 1920s through
the impressionist moments of the 1940s, to his late works of coffins and petrification.
The artwork of Rene Magritte is part of the permanent collections of many museums worldwide, including the Tate Gallery
in London, the Museum of Modern Art in New York, Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris, the National Gallery of Art in
Washington, D.C., Staatsgalerie Moderner Kunst in Munich, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
In recent years, David and Leslee Rogath have loaned art by such artists as Pablo Picasso, Sam Francis and
Andy Warhol to major museums worldwide, including the Whitney Museum of Art in New York, the Museum of
Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the National Gallery of Art
in Washington D.C., the Museu Picasso in Barcelona, the Royal Museum of Brussels and the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Denmark.
